The owner of the Crystalwood Lodge is an Iditarod finisher and these are her sled dogs.

These tough customers are housed about a quarter mile from the lodge and only bark when being fed or when tourists (ie. US!) approach. They certainly responded to our dogs!

Guests are free to go see these noble athletes but must sign a waiver if they want to go in the fenced area and pet the crew. I think I’ll leave Ringo and Sophie (part husky!) back at the lodge if we were to go in the fenced area!!!

Liz’s sled dog team, Briar’s Patch Sled Dogs, has successfully finished Iditarod 2008, to celebrate Liz’s 50th birthday! The team finished the race with 14 dogs (of the starting team of 16) in 14 days’ time. The dogs were magnificent, getting stronger and stronger as the race went on…they know they did something quite special! It was an honor and a privilege to be able to share the trail with them, and to have them take me — emotionally, spiritually and physically — places I could never go otherwise. Magenta Algae – Crystal Creek

If you know anything about Klamath Lake and the surounding wetlands you know there is a variety of algae here, including mares eggs – and Klamath Lake Super-Blue Green!

I’ve never seen this magenta algae before but there was a lot of it in Crystal Creek.

Getaway in Illinois?

my hubbie and i are just under 30. planning a weekend getaway in January for our Annv. we want to stay in Illinois, but if not to far into bordering state we will travel if the price is right……. not looking to break the bank but just get away! we want to stay in hotel just relalx and kick back… we have a will be then 16 month old daughter and while we love her to pieces need some mommy and daddy time.. we arent looking for shopping.. just hotel, room service, maybe a hot tub, fire place… something cozy we can just sit and relax no early morning breakfast…. no schedule any ideas.. thanx in advance!

near St. Louis is Grafton, IL. There are some bed and breakfasts there, but I’d look into the lodge at Pere Marquette State Park. It’s quite nice, and there is dining at the lodge that is quite good. Don’t know if you can get a hot tub or not, though.

Angeline’s First Snow – Mt. Hood, Oregon

Angeline, 6 years old, grew up in Hawaii and has never seen snow so we took her up to Timberline on Mt. Hood in Oregon to experience it for the first time. Though it was summer, we found a few patches here and there and she LOVED it! (though she was surprised when it didn’t feel like cotton candy)

I’ve been dating someone for 9 months now and I love him very much. He has mentioned getting married eventually but he has had a few moments of uncertainty. He hasn’t really ever been in anything this serious. We’re both going on 29 and I was married for 5 years previously which ended in divorce 2.5 years ago and I have a 4 yr old son from the marriage. The few moments he had he said he just got scared, but he knows for sure he wants everything with me. I’m just getting a little nervous because we’ve done things very different to this point. He just bought a house last June and lived at home to that point. I’ve been on my own since 18, have put myself through school and worked hard to get a pretty good job. His job situation isn’t the greatest, which I know it is partially due to the economy, but also that he didn’t go to school for anything. I see everything piling up on him now… his car is on its last leg, he has a roommate sharing his house that is planning on leaving in May and he won’t be able to afford the place himself, he doesn’t have dental insurance and just found out he needs $ 3k in work done to his mouth, yet he just charged $ 600 to go to Reno for a bowling trip. He was supposed to take me on a weekend getaway for Valentine’s but he would have to charge it and I don’t want him to do that. He spends most of his time at my place which is starting to take a toll on me because of groceries and we take my car everywhere. He’s mentioned me moving into his house, but it isn’t in the best area and I really don’t want to move my son. So I suggested that he rents his house and moves in with me since he’s there all the time anyways… He seemed unresponsive. I figured it would also give him a chance to get some things figured out in his life. Am I crazy for taking this on? I have a son to worry about and myself… I care very much about this man and he is great to my son & I, but all of his choices to this point are starting to catch up with him and I tried to do everything right and work hard & now I’m scared this will all set me back. I want nothing more than to settle down again and share my life with someone, but sometimes I’m scared I’ll never get to that place with him… even though he says we will.
